McEwen is effectively the reigning Phantoms player of the year as he won the award in the 2019-2020 season after scoring 52 points in 40 games. Phantoms didn’t play at all in 2020-21 due to Covid,

McEwen is a former Phantoms junior who returned to the club after spells in Canada and Telford in time for the 2018-19 season.

McEwen said: “It feels special to sign for a third year. I am really looking forward to progressing my hockey career alongside Slava and my teammates. I believe we will have a strong team next season, competing for all silverware. Our fans are going to enjoy some good ice hockey next season!”

Phantoms coach Slava Koulikov added: “Corey is one of the most professional players I have worked with. His attention to detail is contagious and rubs off on the rest of the players, especially our young guys. Corey’s speed and offensive threat is lethal and he can change the direction of the game at any moment.

“In the last two seasons he has been involved in scoring & setting up some really crucial goals in big games for our team and played a big part in our historic treble (2018-19). I also love Corey’s attitude and will to improve to become a complete hockey player. If we compare his last two seasons, his offensive production improved for sure but most importantly, his two-way game and on ice awareness went through the roof.”

Phantoms have already announced the return of highly-rated netminder Jordan Marr.
