Peterborough Phantoms came within touching distance of an incredible comeback at English Premier League champions Telford last night (March 7).
The city team looked set to be on the receiving end of a heavy defeat until mounting a dramatic recovery act in the third period, but they were eventually seen off by an empty-net goal in a 6-4 reverse.
Phantoms were no match for the dominant hosts in the opening two sessions. They conceded three times in the opening 20 minutes and twice more in the middle stanza with two of the goals being short-handed.
But it was a different game in the closing period as two Luke Ferrara powerplay goals and strikes from Will Weldon and Darius Pliskauskas had the title-winners on the ropes.
Phantoms pulled netminder Janis Auzins late on in a bid to claw their way level, but Tigers import Max Birbraer completed his hat-trick when firing into the open target with six seconds left on the clock.
Phantoms are back in action tonight (March 8) when they entertain Manchester Phoenix at Planet Ice (5.30pm).
