City of Peterborough Ladies secured a vital win in their quest for promotion from East Division Two North West on Saturday (January 24).

Second-placed City won 3-2 at third-placed Long Sutton and once again it was the explosive ‘TNT’ partnership of Lyn Tancred and Tierney Augustine who fired their side to victory.

Teenager Augustine scored twice in the opening 10 minutes, but it was veteran Tancred who delivered the winning goal after the break, after Sutton had fought back to equalise by half-time.

City were on the front foot from the start and Augustine stormed into the ‘D’ in the third minute before firing an unstoppable shot into the corner of the net. It was 2-0 minutes later as Augustine slammed another fierce shot into the roof of the net.

Sutton were forced into a formation change and quickly pulled a goal back and just before the break a smart move and finish enabled Sutton to level. Robyn Gribble scored both of the Sutton goals.

City manager Lawrie Sullivan tweaked his side’s formation for the second-half and they started well forcing Sutton’s exceptional goalkeeper Lorraine Wallis into some fine saves.

But midway through the half Claire Steels drove into the ‘D’ and shot towards goal where the wily Tancred was waiting to lift the ball over Wallis and into the net.

It was end-to-end until the final whistle with both ‘keepers making fine saves.

City are now seven points clear of third place, but two points behind leaders Spalding who won 3-2 at Cambridge University seconds.

City of Peterborough seconds lost 3-2 at home to Cambridge Nomads in the same division. A Nikki Harris penalty stroke and an Anna Faux goal twice dragged City level before Nomads scored a late winner.

City of Peterborough thirds won 3-0 at Cambridge Nomads seconds in Division Three North West (South) and City fourths won 5-0 at home to Ely thirds in Division Four North West (South). Annie Ash, Andrea Howard and Shana Williams scored for the thirds.
