City of Peterborough Ladies were their victims this weekend, but Wisbech had to work hard to maintain their second place in the table, four points behind leaders Norwich City who have played a game more.

Wisbech exerted heavy pressure on City in the opening stages, but it was the visitors who netted first through Robyn Gribble following a well-worked short corner.

The game then ebbed and flowed with both sides playing some well-worked hockey, but two goals in the final minutes of the first-half saw Wisbech edge in front. Joey Gomm provided the equaliser with a terrific reverse stick shot after a flowing team move before Charlie Paine finished off a one-on-one opportunity.

City dominated the second-half, but they couldn’t find a way past an impressive Wisbech goalkeeper. Pip Nicholas and Tierney Augustine were at the heart of most of City’s good work, but it was left-back Katie Dixon who was voted player-of-the-match.

Only two matches were played in the division because of frozen pitches so City remain in sixth place.

City of Peterborough seconds and Wisbech seconds drew 0-0 in Division Two North West at Bretton Gate.

City of Peterborough firsts host lowly Royston at Bretton Gate next Saturday (January 23, 4pm). Wisbech firsts travel to struggling Bedford seconds.
