HOCKEY: City's impressive drive comes crashing to an end

City of Peterborough's impressive drive towards the East Premier A Division title came to a shuddering halt at Cambridge University on Saturday (January 30).

City had won their previous seven matches to move to within a point of leaders Wapping, but they were expecting a tough game against the students and that’s exactly what they received.

Cambridge University are possibly the only side in the league capable of meeting City on equal terms with respect to fitness, speed and intensity of play.

Both sides went full on for the win, but perhaps surprisingly this was a game of relatively few chances, with the teams cancelling each other out in midfield with most of the game played between the two 25 yard lines.

City had the best of the first half, but failed to convert any of the half-dozen chances they created. The second-half was edged by the side who eventually broke the stalemate via a deflection with 15 minutes to go.

And as City pushed forward trying to get back on terms the University side claimed a second goal with only five minutes remaining. City goalkeeper, and man-of-the-match Cameron Goodey made a fine reaction save, only to have the ball slammed pass him on the volley from the rebound.

City remain second in the table, but four points behind Wapping, ahead of a big weekend for them. City host Ipswich in a league match on Saturday (February 6) before travelling to Banbury for a HA Cup quarter-final at Banbury 24 hours later.
