GYMNASTICS: British Championship medals for Jarman

Deeping School student Jake Jarman won silver and bronze medals at the British Gymnastics Championships held at the Liverpool Echo Arena at the weekend.

The 14 year-old Huntingdon Olympic Gymnastics Club member was one of the youngest competing in the men’s artistic Under 16 competition but out of a field of 42 of the country’s best gymnasts, he won a silver medal on the high bar and a bronze overall.

He competed on six pieces of apparatus but didn’t make the best of starts. His vault was slightly below par and he some ground to make up.

On the parallel bars, jarman injected some new moves into his routine and was pleased to get through without incurring any penalties.

On the high bar everything came together as he perfectly executed a recent addition to his routine releasing and catching the bar in a move named ‘The Tkachev’ after a famous Russian gymnast. Jarman retained the lead on this apparatus until the very last round where his score was beaten by 0.2 but he was pleased to walked away with the silver medal.

He stayed in contention with the leaders after the floor and pommel horse sections and finished with a good performance on the rings to claim the overall bronze medal and cement his reputation as one of the up-and-coming young stars in the gymnastics world.
