GREYHOUNDS: One Peterborough puppy through to Derby final

Following an exciting night (June 8) of racing at Fengate, the city's hopes of a homegrown Puppy Derby champion will rest on the young paws of the Richard Devenish-trained Ballymac Mccole.

Despite five city puppies starting the night with a chance of making the final, home comforts proved to have little effect when both Peterborough trainers David Pruhs and Roger York’s derby dogs came up short in a dash for the final.

The night didn’t get off to a good start for the Peterborough trainers. In the first semi-final, highly-regarded hound Killian Infanta struggled to keep up with the pace for the Spalding-based Pruhs kennel while Devenish’s hope Ballymac Santose failed to recover from a tough first bend.

However, there were no such problems for Newcastle-based dog Droopys Country, who held off the hard charging Savana Lord to take the win. Both dogs became the first to book their place in the grand final next Wednesday (June 15).

It was then the turn of Wisbech trainer Roger York to taste derby disappointment when his sole entry Liosgarbh Nealy couldn’t keep pace with impressive favourite Newinn Shadow while Holdem Rio was best of the rest.

In the last semi-final it was round two of Pruhs against Devenish, and it was the Turves-based trainer that came out on top. Ballymac Mccole flew from trap one to charge up the inside of the field on the first bend and was never headed while Kooga Klammer failed to land a blow for Pruhs.

However, it was a better day for the city trainers in the heats of the Underground Sprint Trophy where Pruhs, Devenish, Sarah Spillane, Simon Cull and York all had a dog make it through to next Wednesday’s final.
