Win that and the city youngsters would represent England in the Sky Sports televised Home International Championships next year.

Milton won a six-player tournament at the superb tree-lined Beedles Lakes course.

The winners were decided by aggregating one gross score with the four best nett scores and Milton’s all-round strength in depth proved crucial.

The event took place on a tough course with difficult pin positions and in windy conditions.

And Milton thought they blown their chance after a series of indifferent performances on the difficult 18th hole.

Jacon Williams (handicap 3) started the hole on an excellent two over par, but dropped three shots to record a round of 77.

Ryan Thomas (4) was one over par starting the 18th and dropped two shots to card a 75 and Euan Herson (6) did exactly the same to finish with a round of 79.

Kai Raymond (7) shot 82, but all these nett scores in the low 70s proved to be exceptional efforts as a set of talented teenagers at the other competing clubs also struggled.

Milton’s Charlie Pearce (8) made a birdie-par finish to claim a nett 78, while Matty Mills (22, but playing off the maximim handicap allowed of 18) shot a gross 90 for an outstanding nett score of 72.
