Nene Park Golf Club recently hosted one of the biggest men’s open competitions in the region.

Sponsored by Robinsons Motor Group and Peterborough Golf Repairs, there were 132 entrants competing over three handicap divisions.

Michael Hinch (net 69) took the 0-9 handicap title, John Gribble (net 70) the 19-28 handicap award and an impressive net 66 from local golfer Richard Elliott earned him the 10-18 handicap prize.

Elliott, a Nene Park Golf Club member for a number of years, said he was shocked to come out on top.

He said: “I’m in total shock at being able to hold a complete round together as I have been very inconsistent of late as the members I play with regularly can confirm.

“To do it in the Open is even more of a shock but very satisfying.”

With a prize table and trophies worth over £1,600, the presentation evening was exciting with most of the entrants attending.

Chris Naylor, club captain of Nene Park Golf Club, said: “I expected this to be a good day with the number of entries, but I had no idea it would be this good.

“With the sun shining but gusting winds, conditions were tricky but the course was in immaculate condition which helped the scoring.

“I’ve had such a great response from everyone who entered. Next year’s Open has already been planned for Sunday July 31s. The only concern I have is that we may have too many players wanting to play. Who knows, we may have to split the field and play over 2 days!”

The Nene Park Golf Club six-month presentation took place after the Open presentations with 100 or so members attending.

With new competition sponsors, new trophies and over £3,000 paid out in prize money, the evening was a great success.

“We are a bit different to most clubs at Nene Park Golf Club,” added Naylor. “We have made a lot of changes over the past 12 months and have seen a 30% rise in membership which has led to a higher standard of golf being played.

“The new sponsors and prize money has also made people try that much harder to improve their golf and we are seeing a lot more members playing in competitions.”

“Everyone associated with this club is ecstatic with what is happening. With the decline in golf memberships around the country, Nene Park Golf Club is bucking the trend. We have new members joining daily and every one of them is keen to get out there on the course and compete.”
