For the second year running top city golfer Stuart Brown has just missed out on the PGA Play-Offs in Turkey.
After the seventh and final Order of Merit event yesterday (September 24), the Lynx Championship at the Rayleigh Club in Essex, Thorpe Wood professional Brown found himself in fourth place in the standings with just the top three going through to the big end-of-season event at the Antalya Golf Club.
Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs Golf Club), David Salisbury (Three Rivers Golf & Country Club) and Glen Portelli (Verulam Golf Club) will be the three East PGA golfers among an elite field of PGA professionals from Britain and Ireland battling it out in Turkey where the top 10 finishers will qualify to play in next May’s multi-million pound BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Salisbury dominated the Lynx Championship. He fired a fabulous first-round 65, backing it up with a cool-as-ice 69 to finish at eight-under-par. That left him no less than four shots clear of a cluster of players including 2015 Order of Merit champion Charlton.
Brown had rounds of 70 and 71 for a one-under-par 141 which gave him 13th place and 112.50 points. A couple of shots better would have got him on the plane to Turkey.
His first round was very steady and included three birdies and 13 pars but in the second round he was a bit up and down. Birdies at the third and fourth were followed by dropped shots at the sixth, seventh, eight and ninth. His back nine was better and included birdies at the 10th, 14th and 15th but that four-hole run of bogeys proved costly.
Last year Brown was fifth in the Order of Merit, just 50 points off a top-three spot.
