YOUTH FOOTBALL: Big county cup win for the Deeping dazzlers
Deeping Rangers Under 15s continue to set the local youth football scene alight.
A week after capturing the Peterborough Youth League Under 15 KO Cup, John Carver’s high-fliers moved a step closer county cup success on Sunday (March 20).
And they didn’t just qualify for a final - they did so playing at a level above their age group.
They moved into the Lincs Under 16 County Cup final by beating their older stablemates - Deeping Rangers Under 16s - 3-1 in the semi-final at Outgang Road.
The win keeps them on course for an honours four-timer as they’re also on course to win the PFA Under 15 Cup and the Under 15 Division One title race as well.
They completed a trophy treble last season and the season before that and it’s now a staggering 79 matches since the Deeping dazzlers last tasted a defeat.
That was in March 2013 and in the intervening period they have won 74 and drawn four matches.
In Sunday’s semi-final it was 1-1 after normal time but the youngsters got the better of their Under 16 opponents in extra-time to finish 3-1 victors.
Nathan Pickering scored their first goal when turning the ball in following an Alex Moroz free-kick and in the first period of extra-time Nathan Lane turned his marker superbly before finishing in style from the left side of the box.
Pickering made sure of the win as the Under 16s committed men forward and were caught by a quick counter-attack.
Manager Carver said: “I thought we were very deserved winners as we rattled the woodwork twice in the first half with their goalkeeper stood watching helplessly. The game could well have been over by half-time.”
Deeping play Lincoln-based team Birchwood Colts in the final at Lincoln City’s ground on April 30.
