James was signed for a reported £500,000 from Hartlepool in September 2014, but scored just twice in 34 Posh appearances, 13 of them as a substitute.

James spent the second-half of last season on loan at Hartlepool and a deal, which had been struck for the 21 year-old to return to Victoria Park on a permanent basis, was eventually scuppered by the Pool chairman.

Rovers will cover all of James’ wages under the terms of the deal and they have an option to buy him at any time.

Posh are also trying to off-load full-back Kgosi Ntlhe and midfielders Harry Beautyman and Jack Payne.

Swindon’s intetest in Beautyman appears to be on the wane, while a prominent League Two club, believed to be Portsmouth, are keen on Payne.

Payne spent last season on loan at Leyton Orient. He is available on a free transfer, but he’s understood not to be keen on dropping into League Two.

Ntlhe has left Posh, but the club are still entitled to a compensation fee for the full-back.
