The DR Congo international, who turned 30 on May 31, is expected to sign a three-year contract at Sixfields tomorrow (June 24).

Zakuani was released by Posh at the end of last season after 253 appearances, in two spells, for the club and nine goals.

The tough-tackling central defender is 13th in the Posh appearance charts in the club’s Football League era.

Zakuani’s decision means he will play against Posh next season.

He made his first Posh appearance, following a £380,000 move from Fulham, in a 1-1 League One draw at Northampton in September, 2008. The clubs moved in opposite directions at the end of that season with Posh winning promotion to the Championship and Cobblers falling into League Two. The arch-enemies have not met in a league game since.

Zakuani was a key part of two Posh promotion campaigns from League One in 2007-08 and 2011-11.

He was sent off for a so-called professional foul the last time Posh met Cobblers in a competitive match in March, 2009.

Other former Posh players on the move in the last few days include midfielder Erhun Oztumer to Walsall, striker Kyle Vassell to League Two side Blackpool and goalkeeper Joe Lewis who has moved from Fulham to Scottish Premier League side Aberdeen.

Since leaving Posh in 2012, Lewis has made 49 first-team appearances for Cardiff, Blackpool and Fulham, 36 of them while on loan at Blackpool.
