Thorney are hungry for more after a taste of life at the top

Thorney had a brief taste of life at the very top of the Peterborough Premier Division and now they're hungry for more.

The villagers, who still play out of Gunthorpe, went top for the first time in the club’s history after winning their opening seven matches, but they lost match number eight at Stamford Lions last Saturday to drop back down to third after a four day stay at the summit.

Moulton Harrox are now top with a perfect winning record from eight games and they travel to Campbell Drive to face Thorney tomorrow (September 8, 2pm). Remarkably it’s the first home game of the season for Thorney whose ground is used for cricket all summer.

“It’s a shame we didn’t stay top for longer,” Thorney manager Tom Florence. “But if you’d offered seven wins from the first eight games I’d have snatched your hand off.

“Especially as they were all away from home at some tough places. Last season our strength was our home form. We only lost once in the league all season so if we can repeat that we will go close to beating last season’s fifth-place finish, which was a club record.

“We deserved to lose at Lions. In fact we should have lost by more, but I’m hoping a shock to our system will help us bounce back in style.

“Obviously it’s ahard game against a Moulton Harrox side who are always strong. They will be there or thereabouts all season as will Netherton who know how to grind results out.

“We have much more depth to our squad this season and it helped us in August when the games came thick and fast. We don’t have a reserve team and our lack of depth last season was costly.”

Sharpshooter Adam Scott is absent this weekend.”

Lions seek to continue their good form by winning at reigning Premier Division champions Netherton tomorrow.
