SWANNY'S WORLD OF SPORT: My England team to win the Euros (well win the group at least)

As his defensive choices are so poor we may as well go all-out attack and try and entertain, a la Posh, but with better results obviously.

My team has a 4-1-3-2 formation.

Goalkeeper: Joe Hart. There is no serious alternative. It’s been good of Manchester City to give their ‘keeper plenty of practice this season by being so poor at the back.

Right-back: Nathaniel Clyne. He’s improved under Klopp at Liverpool. Dynamic, decent on the ball and quick to combine attack and defence competently.

Left-back: Danny Rose. Who would have thought he’d become an international when he was stinking Posh out (right) during a dreadful loan spell a few years back? Leighton Baines has gone backwards this season so forget about him.

Centre-back: John Stones. Yes I know he’s horribly over-rated and far too cocky on the ball, but if it’s a choice between Gary Cahill and Stones, I’m going for the Everton man. Anyway no-one will attack us in the group stages so Stones will be okay for a while.

Centre-back: Chris Smalling. Those asking for John Terry are suffering from an overdose of nostalgia. Those asking for Cahill are suffering from an overdose of ignorance. Smalling is the best of a bad lot.

There's no place for Wayne Rooney in my England team.

Midfield: In my attacking team we need a top-class holding midfielder and as Chris Forrester is ineligible, Eric Dier will have to do.

Midfield: Adam Lallana. Finishing the season strongly for club and country.

Midfield: Ross Barkley. WE are going to need midfielders with energy in my starting line-up and few have more energy than Barkley. Talk of selecting sicknote Jack Wilshere is just bonkers in my opinion.

Midfield: Dele Alli. The best English player in the Premier League bar none and boasts a great understanding with the top flight’s best English striker, Harry Kane.

Striker: Harry Kane. Great finisher, great hold-up play and a great attitude. Unlike many players he doesn’t even treat England friendlies as a chore.

Striker: JamieVardy. Picking the players in form is always a good idea and no-one has been in better form than the Leicester striker over the course of this season. He used to play in non-league football you know.

No room for Wayne Rooney in my starting line-up. In fact I might not include him in the squad and thus resist the temptation to play him.

Rooney is burnt-out, prone to injury and has a desperate record in major championships.

I’d take Dean Sturridge and use him as a last-10 minutes impact sub as he’d probably break down if he played for any longer. He could be the one to finish a scoring chance late in a game though.

I’d play Jordan Henderson when he realises he’s not Steven Gerrard.
