SCHOOL SPORT: Hampton College rule at rowing and football
Hampton College are celebrating a sporting double.
Their outstanding Year 9 football team, who earlier in the year reached the last 32 of the English Schools FA Cup competition, recently won the Peterborough Schools final and that came soon after the school had clinched the Peterborough Schools Indoor Rowing Championship title.
It was the third year running that the footballers had won the Peterborough Schools final and in this year’s decider they beat Arthur Mellow Village College 5-3 after extra-time at The Grange.
Brad Gilbert scored another hat-trick, his fourth for the school this year.
Teacher in charge of the team, Tom Holland, said: “I’m really chuffed to bits for the lads after going out of the English Schools FA Cup.”
The Peterborough Schools Indoor Rowing Championships have been going since 2003 and they are run over five months with one round per month.
The final was held at Hampton College and the hosts finished first in front of last year’s winners Peterborough School, Kings School and former winners Jack Hunt School.
Hampton last won the trophy in 2011, but since that point it has been dominated by Peterborough School.
Head of PE Michael Goode said: “It’s great to get this prestigious trophy in the cabinet again. There were some brilliant performance from the team during the five months of competition.”
