RUTLAND LEAGUE: Leaders turn up with nine men as title race is blown wide open

The Rutland Division One title race has been blown wide open after leaders Bourne turned up for their big game at Wisbech with just nine players.

The outcome was predictable with Wisbech winning by 80 runs. Bourne still hold a nine-point lead over Wisbech at the top, while Nassington are just a further three points adrift after winning by 54 runs at Barnack.

Jack Hargreaves, Dom Stannard and Danny Haynes all passed 50 for Wisbech who reached 255 in their 45 overs. Gary Freear (3-23) and Hargreaves (2-30) did most to dismiss Bourne for 170.

Adam McDermott top scored in Nassington’s even 200 at Barnack with 56. Harrison Craig (4-34) delivered the best bowling performance as the home side were dismissed for 146.

Nassington and Wisbech play each other this weekend (August 21) at Fotheringay Road.

It looks like perm any two from three for relegation after defeats for bottom club Uppingham abnd next-to-bottom Ufford Park yesterday.

Reigning champions Uppingham look doomed as they have a 31-point gap to safety and only four games in which to bridge it.

They were crushed at Stamford by 103 runs after Tom Williams hammered 89 of the home side’s 227-9. Evergreen Chris Birch (4-13) was far too wily for the Uppingham batsmen who mustered just 124 between them.

Ufford, who are five points behind Market Deeping, were beaten at Peterborough Town despite posting a more than respectable 226-5.

But Town passed that total with almost nine overs to spare for the loss of seven wickets.
