STAR defender Gaby Zakuani’s presence at the heart of the Posh defence in Wednesday evening’s Championship fixture at Millwall is in the balance.
The DR Congo international was a surprise absentee from Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at Blackpool after picking up an ankle injury at Stevenage last Tuesday.
Zakuani, who was forced to use his Twitter account yesterday to deny rumours that he would leave London Road before the transfer window closes at the end of this month, could be needed against a Millwall team described as ‘very impressive’ by Posh boss Darren Ferguson last night.
Ferguson said: “Gaby has a problem around his ankle area and it’s touch and go whether or not he plays at Millwall. He picked up the knock in the first few minutes at Stevenage, but typically played on through the pain for the rest of the match.
“Sunday came too soon for him, but we haven’t ruled him out of tomorrow yet, in what will be a very tough match.
“I watched a dvd of Millwall’s match on Saturday against Forest and they were excellent. They play at a great tempo, have pace out wide and they are very strong and physical throughout their team.
“They thoroughly deserved their win and we will need to be at our best to get a result there, but we played well at Blackpool on Sunday and we should take confidence from that.
“It’s early days, but we do look a lot better at the start of this Championship season than the last time we played at this level.”
Millwall’s explosive wide players might tempt Ferguson to bring Craig Alcock into the side ahead of Grant Basey at left-back, but the manager dead-batted all requests for information about his likely starting line-up.
He did confirm he hopes to have Chelsea left-back Ben Gordon at London Road this week, although the finer details of a season-long loan are still under discussion.
Former Posh defender Exodus Geohaghen, who left LondonRoad by mutual consent earlier this month, has signed a one-month contract with League Two side Barnet.
