Peterborough United have handed a trial to a Spanish left-winger from ‘one of the biggest clubs in world football’.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony broke the news in a series of teasing tweets last night (June 27).

He said: “I’ll let you all know in 10 days or so if Posh under me have signed their first Spanish left winger. He is all left foot, loves a dribble & loves a goal and is 21.

“His agent is a good friend of mine who represents a player who went for the biggest transfer fee in last couple seasons. We’ve been working on this since May.”

Naturally MacAnthony’s comments sent Twitter hunters into overdrive. The first name to surface was Jorge Franco Alviz, also known as Burgui, who is the right age (21) and fits the ‘big club profile’ as he’s performed for Real Madrid’s B and C teams.

But Burgui’s current agent is reported to be so-called ‘super agent’ Jorge Mendes’, the man who includes Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho among his clients. Burgui is also still under contract at the Bernabeu Stadium.

More likely Posh are dealing with a player at Jonathan Barnett’s agency, the company that looks after Gareth Bale who made an £86 million move to Madrid in the summer of 2013.

The player concerned will join up with the rest of the Posh squad when they report for the start of pre-season training tomorrow (June 29).
