Peterborough United have today (July 1) signed a striker who scored more than 50 goals last season.
Mathew Stevens signed a three-year contract with Posh after a prolific campaign with Barnet’s junior teams last season. The 18 year-old’s impressive goals-tally was boosted by hat-tricks against Posh Under 18s and Posh Under 21s.
Stevens played 12 times for Barnet’s first-team last season, scoring twice. Ten of those appearances were as a substitute.
Stevens, who has been with the Posh first-team squad in Portugal this week, said: “I’ve been buzzing all week. The lads have made me feel very welcome and I can’t wait to get the next chapter in my career started.
“As soon as I heard Peterborough were interested in signing me I wanted to come. It’s a great club and a big step up for me.
“I will put pressure on myself to do well. I scored for Barnet’s first team as a 17 year-old and I scored more than 50 goals for their youth team.
“I believe if you’re good enough you’re old enough and I want to take advantage of any opportunity that comes my way.
“I feel I’ve done well in training this week. It’s a taste for me of what’s to come.”
Posh will have to pay a compensation fee, determined by a tribunal, to Barnet for Stevens.
