New signing Kieran Sadlier’s stunning strike proved in vain as Peterborough United slipped to their first friendly defeat of the summer at Grimsby tonight (July 28).

Sadlier smashed a 25-yard effort with his right foot past the startled home goalkeeper in the opening minutes, but the home side, who have now won all eight of their pre-season games, responded with second-half goals from Marcus Marshall and Nathan Arnold to claim a 2-1 win.

As expected Posh fielded few of their senior men with only Gaby Zakuani and Ricardo Santos playing 45 minutes apiece at centre-back and Michael Bostwick and Marcus Maddison appearing as late substitites.

Grimsby made most of the running after falling behind and Zakuani’s fine block to thwart Jon-Paul Pittman matched by goalkeeper Dion Henry’s save to deny Arnold.

Kyle Vassell’s deflected effort and a curler from Joe Newell that was saved represented Posh’s best attempt at a second goal.

But Grimsby were level five minutes after the re-start when Marshall beat Henry from close range after fine work by Pittman.

Posh improved thereafter with Newell going close following a superb dribble and Bostwick and Santos were both denied by defensive blocks.

But it was the home side who found the winning goal seven minutes from time although there was more than an element of good fortune as Arnold’s speculative strike looped into the net off a Posh defender’s back.

Transfer listed midfielder Jack Payne was an unused substitute for Posh after his proposed move to League Two side Leyton Orient fell through.

Forty-two Posh fans made the trip north.

Posh are next in action in the Chris Turner Memorial Match against Cambridge United at the ABAX Stadium on Saturday (August 1),
