When a striker’s nickname is ‘The Goal’ it’s a safe bet that bookmakers will sit up and take notice when forming top goal-scorer markets.
So Joe ‘The Goal’ Gormley has been priced up at 20/1 by Football League sponsors Sky Bet to finish top of the League One goal-scoring charts.
That’s joint sixth-favourite for a player who has not yet played a minute of football in the Football League.
He does however have an astonishing record in Irish football where he netted 111 goals in 170 appearances for Belfast-based Cliftonville.
Recent Sheffield United signing Billy Sharp (8/1) is the favourite to finish leading marksman in League One followed by Will Grigg who has joined Wigan.
Gormley’s Posh strike partner Conor Washington is listed at 33/1, while the club’s on-loan forward Luke James (he’s now at Bradford) is 66/1 to finish top scorer , the same odds as former Posh million-pound man Tyrone Barnett who is now at newly-promoted Shrewsbury.
League One top scorer odds
8/1 Billy Sharp (Sheff Utd)
9/1 Will Grigg (Wigan)
12/1 Ian Henderson (Rochdale)
14/1 Andy Williams (Doncaster)
18/1 Leon Clarke (Bury)
20/1 Joe Gormley (Posh)
20/1 Tom Bradshaw (Walsall)
20/1 Cody McDonald (Gillingham)
At the start of this week Sky Bet were offering 11/1 on Posh winning League One which was behind only Sheffield United (9/2) and Wigan (6/1).
But for Posh to go up through any means the price shrinks to 7/2, the same price as Millwall.
League One promotion odds:
6/4 Sheffield United
4/1 Bradford City
For the negative supporters out there Posh are 14/1 to be relegated this season and 40/1 to finish bottom of the entire division.
They are also 11/8 to finish in the top six and 11/1 to win the play-offs.
League One relegation odds:
6/4 Port Vale
Other odds on Posh offered by Sky Bet include:
13/8 to be in the top six in League One on September 1.
11/1 to be top of League One on September 1.
18/1 to win League One with a seven-point start on Sheffield United.
11/2 to finish in the top two.
50/1 for Posh to finish second behind Sheffield United.
