Peterborough United manager Graham Westley wants to thank his ‘special’ club with a Christmas present of six League One points.
The Posh boss admits he’s been overwhelmed by the reaction to his September appointment on and off the field. He believes wins at home to Chesterfield on Boxing Day and at Walsall on December 28 will set his side up for a terrific 2016.
Posh are currently sixth in League One ahead of the festive fixtures. They saw an eight game unbeaten run in all conditions come to an end at Blackpool last weekend (December 19).
Westley said: “It’s been a phenomenal few months for me. It’s a special club to work for. They let me manage, they don’t deliver any surprises, the players have been fantastic, as well as every other adjective I could throw at them, and the fans have made me feel unbelievably welcome.
“It’s a great place to be at the moment and everyone is rightly excited by this team.
“Six points would be the perfect way to finish the year and set up a successful 2016 so that’s what we are aiming for. It’s great to be home on Boxing Day in front of a big crowd. We will do our best to entertain them and get the right result.”
Chesterfield have lost their last six League One matches and defeat at Posh would equal a club-record losing run set in 1988.
But Westley warned: “Chesterfield are capable of good play. They also have weaknesses that we can exploit. It’s important that we bounce back from our blip at Blackpool last weekend with a good performance and a good result.
“The conditions didn’t help us at Blackpool, but we don’t want to be known as a fair-weather team. We have to be able to win when conditions aren’t perfect.”
Chesterfield look set to appoint Danny Wilson as manager ahead of their trip to the ABAX Stadium. Chesterfield sacked Dean Saunders after a 4-0 home defeat to Swindon in November. Wilson was sacked by Barnsley in February.
Posh will be without on-loan left back Callum Elder for the entire festive fixture list because of injury. Andrew Fox is favourite to replace him.
The Posh players won’t be required to train on Christmas Day.
