Grant McCann’s first match as caretaker manager resulted in a resounding 5-1 win at Oldham Athletic today (September 12).

McCann brought in Lee Angol, Souleymane Coulibaly and Erhun Oztumer for the match with all three scoring.

Ben Alnwick: Kept fairly busy as Oldham pressed and made a fabulous save onto his post from Dominic Poleon. Had no chance with Murphy’s goal and played much of the match as a sweeper-keeper 8

Michael Smith: An assist for the final goal by Angol was reward for an accomplished performance both at the back and for beginning attacks down the right flank 7

Ricardo Almeida Santos: Not as re-assuring as Zakuani in the heart of defence but made an excellent sliding challenge in the penalty area which he had to time well 6

Gabriel Zakuani: Back from international duty, Zakuani brings stability to the defence. The Oldham goal would have been a disappointment but he made some important blocks 7

Callum Elder: Like Smith he became involved in the attacking play and looked tight in defence. Will be hard for Kgosi Ntlhe to come back in at left-back 7

Christopher Forrester: Played as the defensive midfielder in a diamond which did not seem to suit him, but positionally he was okay and tidy in possession. Will be under pressure when Michael Bostwick returns from suspension 6

Jermaine Anderson: An excellent second-half performance typified by an interception, run and through-ball for Coulibaly to score. Also ran a good chunk of the pitch before hitting the side-netting in the first-half. An open match suited his style 7

Erhun Oztumer: A surprise recall to the side, but he made it look like a great decision. A dinked pass to Coulibaly led to Angol’s opener, and although he faded in the second-half, he was applauded by the Oldham fans when he came off 7

Marcus Maddison: Five goals scored and none by Maddison. It made a change that attacking midfielder was not the person relied on to get a goal, but he did manage an assist for Coulibaly’s second following a short corner. A quieter performance by his standards at the tip of the diamond 6

Lee Angol: Two goals on his Posh debut and his first Football League start was a fair reward for a lively performance. The former Luton player ran the channels well and put himself in good positions to score. His first finish was a tap-in but his second was a controlled finish from inside the area. It’s only one match but it’s odd to see why he has not been given a chance before today 8

Souleymane Coulibaly: Coulibaly is what fans want to see - exciting and unpredictable. A ridiculous attempt at an overhead kick went badly wrong, but he runs hard and celebrates even harder with his back-flips. His first goal looked like a slightly-scuffed effort, but after seeing a couple of difficult heading opportunities pass by he finally got his reward from a Maddison cross 8
