Peterborough United centre-back Gaby Zakuani moved a step closer to an appearance in the 2018 World Cup Finals.
Zakuani’s DR Congo side have reached the group qualifying stages of the African qualification process after pipping Burundi 5-4 on aggregate over the weekend.
DR Congo won the first leg in Burundi 3-2 last Thursday (Novenber 12) and drew 2-2 in the home leg yesterday (November 15).
Zakuani played the full 90 minutes of the first leg, but spent the second leg on the substitutes’ bench after picking up a strain in the pre-match warm-up. He had been scheduled to start.
The winners of each of five groups of four will be Africa’s World Cup representatives in Russia.
Zakuani has been substituted because of injury in the first half of both of his last two Posh appearances, firstly with a hamstring injury and then with a head injury.
He is due to return to the UK today (November 16).
