Peterborough United manager Dave Robertson reckons his players looked ‘a million dollars’ on the opening day of pre-season training (June 29).
The first-team squad, minus Gaby Zakuani, Jack Collison and Jack Baldwin, spent the day at the club’s Nene Park Academy training ground in the gym and on the grass pitches, where the ball made an unusually early appearance.
Posh are nine days away from their first friendly at non-league side Dulwich Hamlet on Wednesday, July 8. They travel to Ireland for a short tour on Monday, July 13 with the first League One fixture at Rochdale scheduled for August 8.
Robertson said: “The lads look a million dollars. They’ve all come back to the club in good shape and they look sharp which is pleasing. Some have been coming in on their time off to use the gym and to take part in training sessions we’ve been putting on, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“The lads have been in the gym where we’ve been working them hard, but I also believe in getting the balls out early. We’ve been doing some one-on-one, possession-based passing work.
“We have given Gaby an extra week off as he’s been playing competitively for DR Congo since the end of last season. Collison and Baldwin are at the FA Centre at St George’s Park taking advantage of the excellent facilities there, but working hard under physio John Chatfield.
“We have a set of players who want to be champions, who want to be promoted this season.”
A 21 year-old Spanish winger started a trial with Posh today. He’s from one of the ‘biggest clubs in the world’ according to Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony.
Motorpoint have agreed to sponsor the club’s training kit for the next two seasons.
