Peterborough United witnessed a high-class 45-minute display from a substitute during a 3-3 Checkatrade Trophy draw at MK Dons tonight (September 4).
Latest signing Jamie Walker’s arrival as a half-time replacement spurred Posh to a second-half fightback from 3-0 down.
Walker scored one goal and impressed with his comfort on the ball, his passing and his shooting.
Posh followed a dreadful first-half display with a terrific second-half effort before losing a penalty shoot out for an extra point.
Conor O’Malley: Made a strong early save at 0-0 and couldn’t be blamed for any MK goals. Kicking was okay, just lacks Aaron Chapman’s presence, Came close to saving a couple of penalties in the shootout 6
Darren Lyon: The right-back debutant struggled defensively before the break when he also delivered what should have been a goal-creating cross for Toney. Like everyone else he livened up in the second half and played solidly 6
Tyler Denton: Outjumped for the first goal, understandably as Chuks Aneke is a foot taller, but he didn’t convince offensively or defensively until setting up the second Posh goal late on 5.5
Josh Yorwerth: All at sea before the break. Out of position and caught out as a result too often. Settled down in the second half 5
Ryan Tafazolli: Captain for the night found Aneke a handful. Shed blood for the cause after one strong challenge. The best Posh defender 6.5
Callum Cooke: Hadn’t really got into the game when he went off following a heavy, and illegal, challenge towards the end of the first half 6
Louis Reed: Likes a short passing game. Didn’t get on the ball often enough to prove it, but another to improve after the interval and he played a big part in the second Posh goal with a fine crossfield pass 6
Marcus Maddison: Drifted in and out of the game first-half, but still managed to play the best pass of the opening 45 minutes to Toney and some decent ones after the break. Classy penalty conversion 7
Isaac Buckley-Ricketts: Occasional flashes of speed and skill from the debutant, but missed a good chance to score before he was substituted at half-time 5
George Cooper: Woke up after the break to convert a brilliant free kick and to set up the last-gasp equaliser. Looked a completely different player in the second half. Took penalty well 7
Ivan Toney: Ivan’s finishing was terrible with three glaring misses, but he actually played pretty well apart from that. Strong, physical and kept going until the end. Tucked a penalty away 6
Jamie Walker: (for Buckley-Ricketts, 46 mins): Made a huge impact. Classy runner with the ball, took his goal well, hit the inside of a post from distance and a convincing penalty 8
Alex Woodyard: (for Cooke, 37 mins). Made a difference by protecting the back four. Struck a decent penalty that was saved in the shootout 7
Matt Godden: (for Reed, 83 mins)
Aaron Chapman: (not used).
Siriki Dembele: (not used).
Rhys Bennett: (not used).
Jason Cummings: (not used).
