Peterborough United don't always fail to perform in front of their biggest crowds (just most of them)

The defeat to Portsmouth at the ABAX Stadium attracted a bumper attendance of 10,472, the highest since Posh were relegated from the Championship in May, 2013 and just 300 fewer than Bournemouth’s Premier League attendance against Leicester last Saturday (September 15).

The last home game of the 2012/13 season, a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday secured by a brilliant free-kick goal from Grant McCann, was watched by 13,938. Last weekend’s gate was the biggest since that match.

The last ten 10,000 plus gaates at London Road have seen four wins and six defeats for the home side, but Posh have now lost the last three, all of them League One matches against Leyton Orient, Sheffield United and Portsmouth.

The previous seven league games to generate a crowd over 10,000 all arrived in the last two seasons of Championship football.

Last Saturday’s big gate did push the Posh average attendance for the first four home games of the season up to 7,996, the 10th best in League One.

Predictably Sunderland (30,627) lead the way followed by Pompey (18,404) and Bradford City (16,390).

Accrington’s average home gate is 2,117, the lowest in League One.
