Peterborough United have confirmed midfielder Jack Payne has held transfer talks with League two side Leyton Orient
The ‘Os’ are one of several clubs linked with Payne. League One rivals Doncaster and Barnsley are also believed to shown an interest in the combative play-maker.
The 23 year-old was placed on the transfer list at the ABAX Stadium at the end of last season even though he had skippered the first team throughout the campaign.
Payne is understood to want a move nearer to his native Kent. He was linked with a return to Gillingham, the club that sold him to Posh in June, 2013, earlier in the summer but nothing materialised.
Leyton Orient are based in East London and are managed by Ian Hendon and Andy Hessenthaler, two other ex-Gills players. Hessenthaler managed Payne at the Priestfield Stadium.
The ‘Os’ have a midfield vacancy after selling Romain Vincelot to Coventry last week.
Posh would expect a fee for Payne, but they won’t get anywhere near what they paid for him. Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony hinted on Twitter recently that Payne cost £700k in transfer fees.
Payne made his 100th Posh appearance last season.
MacAnthony said: “Nothing is agreed with Orient at present and they are one of a few clubs negotiating for him (Payne).
