Peterborough United have today (June 29) signed midfielder Jack Payne for an undisclosed fee from League One rivals Gillingham.
The 21 year-old has signed a four-year deal at London Road and will travel with the first-team squad on their short tour of Ireland which starts on Monday (July 1).
Payne played 14 times for Posh last season and played so well he became manager Darren Ferguson’s major summer transfer target.
Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: “Jack is a quality acquisition. I’m pleased we as a club continue to purchase top quality young league talent which in turn sees Football League clubs benefit financially.
“Jack will only enhance our already strong squad as we work towards competing for League One honours.”
Posh boss Darren Ferguson added: “It’s an excellent signing. Jack did very well for us last season and he wants to help us get back into the Championship.”
Posh are expected to complete the sale of star striker Dwight Gayle to Premier League side Crystal Palace for £6 million on Monday.
