Marcus Maddison staked a big claim for a Peterborough United first-team recall with a two-goal showing for the club’s development XI last night (March 24).
Maddison is available for the League One home game with Coventry on Saturday (March 28) after completing a three-match suspension. He’s likely to be employed as a substitute in that match thanks to the form of wingers Jon Taylor and Joe Newell.
“Marcus was magnificent,” Posh boss Dave Robertson stated. “Harry Anderson wasn’t bad on the other flank either so it was a good run out for us.”
Maddison created the opening goal in a 4-2 win at St Neots with a lovely cross that was converted by Kyle Vassell and scored the second himself with a terrific strike from 20 yards.
St Neots pulled a goal back from the penalty spot following a shove by new professional Toby Adebayo-Rowling just before half-time, but Posh won a spot-kick in the second-half following a foul on Jonathan Edwards which Maddison converted.
Anderson made it 4-1 with a deflected shot before the home side scored a second goal in the final stages.
Central defender Christian Burgess suffered a knock to the head during the game. He recovered and is expected to start against Coventry in the absence of Ricardo Santos (suspended) and Gaby Zakuani (international duty).
Posh remained in sixth place in League One - the last play-off spot - following Rochdale’s 3-0 defeat at Oldham last night. Fifth-placed Sheffield United beat Scunthorpe 4-0 and are now five points clear of Posh.
