Posh goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik enjoyed every part of his Championship debut yesterday (August 18), apart from the result.
The new number one at London Road made a stunning first-have save to stop Michael Bostwick putting through his own net during a 2-0 opening day defeat at Leicester.
He also commanded his penalty area impressively throughout the 90 minutes as Posh succumbed to second-half goals from Wes Morgan and Andy King.
Olejnik said: “It was a great day apart from the fact we lost of course. That has to be the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of and it was a wonderful experience.
“It’s a real dream for me to play at grounds like Leicester’s and with and against such good players. We played well as well considering what we were up against.
“We had analysed the way Leicester play before the game and our plans worked well in the first-half. We kept the ball and frustrated them.
“They didn’t create many chances. I was pleased with the one save I made in the first-half (from Bostwick), but the saves I made in the second half were pretty routine.
“We defended well. The boys were well organised defensively and we restricted them to just a few opportunities. We couldn’t do a lot about the goals we conceded.
“We had some chances of our own as well, but didn’t take them and that was crucial. We will come back stronger through and we’ll be ready for the next game.”
A crowd of over 23,000 watched Posh at the King Power Stadium. Almost 2,000 Posh fans made the short trip and most would have been as impressed as their manager with Olejnik’s performance.
Posh boss Darren Ferguson said: “Bobby’s a really good goalkeeper. I was pleased when we got him and nothing I’ve seen since has made me change my mind.
“He played well at Leicester. The same he made in the first-half was outstanding, but he also gives us something we haven’t had from our goalkeepers in recent seasons and that’s excellent communication skills.”
Posh host Millwall in their opening Championship fixture of the season at London Road on Tuesday (August 21). Leeds visit London Road next Saturday (August 25).
