POSH REACTION: Williams will be up and running after debut goal

The 22 year-old recent signing from Nuneaton Borough scored on his first start as a Football League player to fire Posh 2-0 ahead at half-time in their League One clash with Port Vale at the ABAX Stadium on Saturday (March 12).

But Williams was substituted late in the game, just before Vale scored twice to pinch a 3-2 win.

Williams, who actually made his Football League debut as a substitute for Walsall three-and-a-half-years ago, said: “It was obviously great to score my first goal for the club, but to be honest, the three points were far important than personal accolades. Having said that, the hardest goal to score is always the first one, so it is nice to be off and running.

“I tried to hit it early and I think that is what caught the goalkeeper out. He took a step to the right and couldn’t get back across. The manager has been encouraging me to get my shots off early and I was delighted it paid off and I was able to score.

“I had two chances before I converted one and I missed them, but I tried to keep my head up and keep going and thankfully I put the third chance away.

“Myself and Tom Nichols have developed a good understanding from training together and we were able to take that onto the pitch. The more you work together, the better that becomes.

“The players were bitterly disappointed with the result. When you are 2-0 up, you shouldn’t be throwing the game away and we know that. We are going to work out socks off, demand more from each other and try and turn it around.”

Williams must have a good chance of starting again when Posh travel to Doncaster for a League One match on Saturday (March 19). The two teams have the worst current form in League One. In the last 10 matches, Posh have taken four points, while Rovers have managed just two.
