POSH PREVIEW: Goals galore is a Peterborough United ambition for the rest of the season

One of the remaining ambitions for Posh this season is to finish as the leading scorers in League One. They are currently joint-top on 65 goals with second-placed Wigan and fourth-placed Gillingham.

On paper a home game tomorrow (April 2, 3pm) against a Crewe side struggling for form at the bottom of the table - they haven’t won in their last 10 matches - appears to be a golden opportunity to boost that goals tally, but Westley is wary of any team desperate for points.

“Games against lower-end teams are always dangerous at this time of the season,” Westley stated. “Colchester proved that by winning at Coventry earlier this week.

“We will win this game if our resolve and attitude is spot on. If we are lacking in any way we will have problems. Crewe will test us anyway. They need points quickly.

“I’m confident we are ready though. We raring to go and deliver the sort of fast-flowing, attacking football this club and its fans want to see. We still feel we have plenty to prove this season.

“Our supporters buy season tickets to see goals and exciting play. We are aware of our responsibilities in that respect and we want to finish the season as strongly as possible to ensure we are seen as a serious threat next season.

“We’ve scored five goals in our last two matches which is very encouraging and we have shown signs of being back to our best going forward.

“We played three up front in the second-half against Coventry and one just behind them and that’s a formation that can work as long as the forward players stay right up front.

“Aaron Williams has been excellent, He’s doing the sort of stuff that Conor Washington used to do for us. He holds play up, he’s a willing runner and he has an eye for goal.

“When you have a player like Aaron doing well it helps the other forward players. He brings them into the game and gives them time on the ball. And when the ball is at the feet of a Marcus Maddison, a Lee Angol or a Shaquile Coulthirst opposition teams are going to have problems.

“I’ve enjoyed Shaq’s (Coulthirst) contribution to the squad. He’s not quite adapted fully to League One, but his work-rate and his approach have been top-class. He’s very versatile as he showed against Coventry last week when he playd a litle wider as a substitute and made a massive contribution to our victory.

“I’ve always had versatile players in my squads. It means I can have smaller squads and keep players more involved.”

The five players who missed the 3-1 Good Friday win over Coventry - Michael Smith, Gaby Zakuani, Harry Toffolo, Kgosi Ntlhe and Martin Samuelsen - because of international call-ups are all available tomorrow with right-back Smith the most likely to be recalled.

Young winger Jordan Nicholson won’t be involved for the rest of the season after it was revealed he broke his leg in a recent friendly at Leeds.

Westley added: “The international players all returned with big smiles on their faces, but we have to respect how well the team did in their absence.

“Consistency of selection is important when building a winning a team.”
