Maddison’s 13 goals in all competitions and 14 League One assists were an excellent return for a player who struggled at times to get into the side managed by Graham Westley.

The 22 year-old’s reward was to collect the Player-of-the-Year award from official supporters group ‘Forever Posh’ after the last match of the season, a 5-1 win at Blackpool at the ABAX Stadium on Sunday (May 9).

Maddison said: “I’m personally happy with the way I played this season, but it’s the team matters and we were nowhere near where we expected to be in terms of league position. We looked like getting into trouble at one point, but at least we stopped the rot by sticking together.

“There wasa some frustration for me earlier in the season as the previous manager stopped playing me and then picked me out of position at left-back.

“As individuals we have to do the best we can every time we set foot on the field and I did my best at left-back, even though it was a bit of a nightmare for me having to learn new disciplines.

“I came here as a right winger so I was used to playing against a left-back. Darren Ferguson turned me into a number 10 which I enjoyed. I’m happy playing in any attacking position to be honest.

“It’s only been my second season as a full-time professional and I’m pleased with my goals and assist numbers. I hope to be even better next season.”

Maddison proved to be a hit on you tube last week when completing the club’s ‘Skip Challenge’ using the ‘rabona’ technique.

“I didn’t take it seriously at first,” Maddison stated. “But then I thought my early attempts were unacceptable so I used the rabona and pulled it off at the fifth attempt!”
