Peterborough United's early term report: '˜B' but can do even better

Posh made it six wins from seven unbeaten League One matches with a thrilling 3-2 success at Southend United last Saturday (September 8).

Ivan Toney’s late goal enabled Posh to open up a two-point lead at the top of the table ahead of a huge clash with second-placed Portsmouth at the ABAX Stadium this Saturday (September 15).

But Evans reckons there is much more to come from his squad.

“We’ve shown our best form in spells this season,” Evans stated. “One of them was in the last 15 minutes at Southend.

“But if I was writing a school report on our start I’d give us a ‘B’ and comment how we’ve worked impressively hard, gained excellent results and yet we can do even better.

“There is so much more to come from this squad. We have obvious quality and the attitude has been spot on, but we have yet to put on a 90-minute performance.

“What really excites me is the strength in depth.

“When we started to struggle at Southend in the second-half I looked behind me and saw several players who I could have sent on confident they would make a difference.

“Marcus Maddison, Ivan Toney and Joe Ward did go on and perform well, but I could easily have sent on Louis Reed and George Cooper in the belief they would also have had a positive impact on the side.

“There is some serious competition for places now. Standards will have to remain very high or changes will take place. It’s inevitable that players will come into the starting line-up at times during the season and they won’t weaken the team.”

Callum Cooke was back training with the first-team squad yesterday (September 11) after missing the Southend match with an ankle injury.
