The Championship sacking season gets under way, but it would cost £1 million to even have a chance of prising Fergie away from Peterborough United

Peterborough United inserted a £1 million release clause in manager Darren Ferguson’s club contract.

The 48 year-old is doubtless attracting attention from bigger clubs again after guiding Posh to the top of League One this season despite the loss of top scorer Ivan Toney in the summer.

But anyone who fancies Ferguson as their next boss would have to stump up a big fee and even then it’s uncertain he would want to leave. The club and manager have made a commitment to stay together for the duration of a long-term project involving a return to the Championship and the building of a new stadium.

Posh co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has confirmed Ferguson couldn’t go anywhere without permission from Posh and the payment of a ‘seven-figure release fee.’

His fellow co-owner Dr Jason Neale has said: “Darren has one of the safest jobs in football, will ultimately manage in the Championship and have the opportunity to lead us out in a new stadium. Why would he leave?”

Championship club Sheffield Wednesday sacked manager Gary Monk yesterday (November 9), but Ferguson has not yet been included in any betting lists to replace him. The manager of Derby County, Philip Cocu. is expected to leave Pride Park soon with Wayne Rooney favourite to replace him.

Ferguson has previously managed Posh and Preston North End in the Championship.
