RIP: Peterborough United full-back Peter Hindley: ‘The Tank was part of the club’s meanest defence’

Peter Hindley, a member of the meanest defence in Peterborough United history, has passed away at the age of 76.

Hindley was the regular right-back in the Posh team who conceded a club record low of 33 goals in 46 games in the 1977-78 Division Three season. That team missed out on promotion to the second tier of English football for the first time in the club’s history only on goal difference.

Hindley played 366 times for Nottingham Forest before joining Posh for the start of the 1976-77 season.

Nicknamed ‘The Tank’ he made 129 appearances for Posh, scoring one goal in a 3-1 win over arch rivals Northampton Town in 1977.

After leaving Posh and retiring from football in 1979 he owned and raced greyhounds, often running them around the London Road pitch. Legend has it he once washed them in the communal bath in the home dressing room.

Hindley stayed local after retirement, living in Bretton and working as a painter and decorator.

He had been suffering with dementia and passed away this morning.#

*Ray Smith who played 23 times for Posh in the 1972-73 season and scored eight goals passed away last month.
