Practice made perfect for matchwinner Ward, Eisa proved a great replacement for Dembele and Szmodics’ superb attitude

Peterborough United wingback Joe Ward’s stunning winning goal came as no real surprise to his manager Darren Ferguson.

Ward completed a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Ipswich Town at the Weston Homes Stadium early in the second-half with a goal direct from a 25-yard free-kick.

“It was an unbelievable free-kick,” Ferguson insisted. “I was stood right behind it and it was going in all the way.

“Joe deserved that. He practises them every day and so a just reward. It was an unstoppable shot.”

Ferguson also praised forwards Sammie Szmodics and Mo Eisa. Eisa stepped up after Siriki Dembele failed a morning fitness test on a sore knee.

“Siriki reported on Monday and said his knee was sore,” Ferguson revealed. “We didn’t expect that. We have him a fitness test this morning and he said it was still sore so Mo stepped in and did well.

“Mo just needs a goal. He really is an out-and-out finisher and if we keep creating chances for him her will score. Once he gets one he will go on a run.

“Sammie’s attitude is just spot on. He just keeps running even when he should be tired. He played too deep in the opening stages, but once he pushed on he was very good again.

“He has great ability and great fitness, but his attitude is just as impressive. He will chase, run and press for 90 minutes.”
