The Pilgrims’ boss had been interested in a permanent deal for Cooper, who spent of last season on loan at the promoted League Two club.

However the fee Posh want for the 23-year-old, who is under contract with them until next summer, is beyond Argyle.

Lowe told the Plymouth Herald this morning (July 30): “We love George and we certainly would have been interested.

“But the money that is getting touted around for him is nowhere near our levels so we will move on from him, sadly.

“When one door closes another one opens for someone and we have got plenty of other targets.

“We would have liked to have done George, but we will have to move on now because Peterborough were asking for too much money and we just can’t afford it, especially in the current climate.”

Lowe did not completely rule out the prospect of another loan deal for Cooper at a later date.

Lowe added: “If something materialises down the line then that may be something to look at, but for the time being we are certainly out.”

Cooper was instrumental in Argyle’s 2019/20 promotion-winning campaign, not least with his numerous assists for goals.

Cooper has a chance to break into the Posh first-team this season according to manager Darren Ferguson and has been training with the senior squad this week.
