But who remembers these 20 players, all of whom played for Posh in the Championship, something club stars like Britt Assombalonga and Jack Marriott never managed?
1.
JOSH SIMPSON: Posh years: 2009-2010 Posh apps: 21 Posh goals: 2. This midfielder’s claim to fame was scoring twice (first goal pictured, left, white shirt) in one of the most famous games in Posh history, the fight back from 0-4 down to draw 4-4 with Cardiff City in a 2009 Championship fixture. That was just his third game for the club - he didn’t come on until the 67th minute - and it suggested a surprise recruitment from local rivals Cambridge United would turn out to be a masterstroke by manager Darren Ferguson. Unfortunately Ferguson left the club soon afterwards and Simpson only started eight games before he was sent on loan to Southend United and given away to Crawley Town where he was a success combining with future Posh manager Steve Evans to win two promotions. Simpson played for Plymouth before drifting into non-league with Bishop’s Stortford. Now at Cambridge City who play a division below Peterborough Sports. Photo: Midlands

JAANAI GORDON: Posh years: 2011-2014, Posh apps: 7, Posh goals: 0. This powerful striker made his Posh debut aged 16 as a substitute in a Championship home fixture against Wolves in September, 2012. Local boy Gordon remains the ninth youngest player in Posh history. He was highly rated by all at Posh and he went on to start a game against Hull City later that same season. But off-field issues caused a parting of the ways and a shock signing by West Ham where he stayed for three years without breaking into the first-team. Gordon spent time on loan at Nuneaton, Sligo Rovers and Newport County before signing for Gary Johnson at League Two outfit Cheltenham Town. He’s back in non-league football now though having left Oxford City for Banbury United just last month. Banbury play in the Southern League alongside Peterborough Sports. Photo: Midlands

NATHAN KORANTENG: Posh years: 2009-2011, Posh apps: 4, Posh goals: 0. This exciting winger was thrust into action towards the end of the Championship relegation season of 2009-10 on four occasions while he was just 17. The Posh Academy graduate was handed his first-team debut by Jim Gannon in a 1-0 defeat at Swansea and earned a one-year professional deal at London Road. But he never threatened to break back into the team even though Posh had now been relegated and was soon heading out on loan to non-legaue clubs Tamworth and Rushden and Diamonds. And he’s stayed in non-league football since Posh released him at the end of the 2010-11 season. Koranteng, who is now 28, spent time at St Neots, but is now at Isthmian League side Waltham Abbey, his sixth different club since his Football League dream ended. DOMINIC GREEN: Posh years: 2008-2010, Posh apps: 31, Posh goals: 2. This skilful wide player had just turned 19 when Posh took him from Dagenham & Redbridge despite interest from Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. And when his arrival as a second-half substitute helped turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win at arch rivals MK Dons in his third appearance for the club the hype went into overdrive. Green won a penalty converted by Craig Mackail-Smith and scored the winning two minutes later to leave director of football Barry Fry to claim the new signing would ‘one day play in the Premier League.’ Instead, after loan spells at Chesterfield and Rushden & Diamonds, Green returned to Dagenham & Redbridge in 2011. Green has played non-league football for a decade now and is currently with Isthmian League side Hornchurch FC where he also coaches.
