The exciting attacking midfielder loved his time on loan last season at Posh so much he vowed they would be the only League One side he’d join if he couldn’t break into the Bristol City side for the 2020-21 campaign.

Szmodics had two of the biggest League One clubs - Portsmouth and Sunderland - after his services, but he’s chosen instead to sign a four-year contract at the Weston Homes Stadium.

The 24 year-old didn’t sign in time to play against Burton Albion in tonight’s (September 8) EFL Trophy tie at London Road, but he’s raring to go in the League One opener at Accrington Stanley on Saturday (September 12). Szmodics scored in a 2-0 win at Accrington last season.

“I’m naturally fit and I’ve played three pre-season games for Bristol City,” Szmodics stated. “In fact I’m probably fitter now than when I joined last season!

“I’m keen to hit the ground running again. I’m disappointed I can’t play tonight, but I’ll be up for Accy away on Saturday. I can’t wait to get started again.

“The deal took a long time coming. I started pre-season at City not knowing what was going to happen, but when it became clear I could leave there was only ever one League One club I was going to join as I enjoyed it so much here last season.

“That’s what I told the manager at the end of last season. He showed a lot of faith in me and I am convinced we would have gone up last season as we were playing such great football.

“I’m excited to be back. In fact it feels like I never left. The band is back together again!”
