Peterborough United’s outstanding FA Cup first round record and other titbits re the greatest knockout competition in football

Peterborough United have not been knocked out of the FA Cup at the first round stage since the 2005-06 season when Mark Wright’s team were dumped out by Nigel Clough’s non-league Burton Albion 1-0 at the Pirelli Stadium following a 0-0 draw at London Road.

Posh have only failed to reach the third round once since then (they started in the third round in their seasons in the Championship) and that was in the 2014-15 campaign when they lost 1-0 at Colchester in the second round.

Burton are one of six non-league clubs to have beaten Posh in the FA Cup. The others are Wigan (1970), Northwitch Victoria (1976), Dagenham (1984), Sutton (1987) and Kidderminster (2014).

As a non-league club, Posh beat eight Football League clubs in the FA Cup: They were Torquay (1952), Aldershot (1953), Ipswich (1955 & 1960), Bradford Park Avenue (1956), Lincoln (1957), Shrewsbury (1959), Walsall (1959).

Posh have beaten top-flight opposition in the FA Cup just once when Arsenal lost 2-1 at London Road in a fourth round tie in 1965. Posh lost to Chelsea in the quarter-finals, the best run in the club’s history.
