Shrewsbury Town chief executive Brian Caldwell made the proposal just a couple of days before lower division clubs were expected to vote for a September 12 start date.

Caldwell told the Shropshire Star that it would be prudent to wait for fans to be allowed into grounds. The UK Government has given the go-ahead for sporting stadia to host some supporters from October 1.

Caldwell believes Carabao Cup ties and Leasing.com Trophy ties could be played in September as they tend to attract smaller crowds than League fixtures anyway.

Caldwell has also suggested that the League One and Two seasons are extended one week, to May 15, and that two fixtures are played either side of the May 3 Bank Holiday weekend, to help bring bigger crowds.

Posh are keen on a September 12 resumption even without fans in the ground.
