Gyollai (23) became the first Posh signing of the summer when snapped up on a free transfer from Wigan Athletic last week.

It’s widely assumed he has been brought in as back-up to Christy Pym who won the Golden Glove for keeping the most clean sheets (15) in League One last season.

But Gyollai, a Hungarian youth international who marked his debut in Saturday’s (August 1) friendly win at Stamford with a stunning second-half save, doesn’t see it like that.

“I’m excited to be able to fight for the number one shirt,” Gyollai said. “The plan for now is get some minutes under my belt and to give the manager a headache for the first game of the season.

“I was with the Wigan first team squad on some occasions, but I’ve played mainly under 23 football. I’ve had some good coaches, I’ve learnt how to handle myself, how to handle pressure and I want to show all that to the fans, to the staff, and to the players.

“It feels amazing just to be here. The move was in the pipeline for a few days and I’m so glad it’s done now.

“I’ve come to a big club and I’m aware of how they give young players a chance to play and to develop.

“It’s a squad full of quality players who deserve to be in the Championship and I hope I can add some quality to the squad.”

Gyollai, who is 6ft 5ins tall, was at Stoke before Wigan, but didn’t make a senior appearance for either club.
