Posh let first-team coach Aaron Mclean and analyst Sean O’Callaghan go yesterday (June 11) as they prepare for the 2020-21 season as a League One club.

The club admit they are resigned to losing Toney, but they still expect to receive big money for a player they valued at £11 million last January.

Teenager Ricky-Jade Jones has also caught the attention of predatory higher-level clubs, but a ‘not-for-sale’ sign has been attached to the 17 year-old.

Posh director of football Barry Fry said: “Ivan will go. That’s 99% certain, although we will expect a considerable fee for him.

“He’s a great player and a great lad and we will miss him, but we told him last summer that he could leave if we didn’t go up and we will honour that.

“We are not going to be short of offers and he will not be leaving on the cheap. Ivan has been an incredible signing. His improvement in two seasons with us has been remarkable.

“He was by far and away the best player in League One last season and he deserves a shot at the Championship or even the Premier League.

“To think we got him for £350k is staggering, but Newcastle did get a decent sell-on clause into his contract.

“I can’t say how much it is, but it’s not as much as 40% as some have been suggesting.”

Celtic, Bournemouth, Brentford, Middlesbrough and Charlton have all been linked with a move for Toney in the past. The club record sale by Posh is Dwight Gayle to Crystal Palace for £6 million in 2013.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Spurs and Leeds United have all been linked with a move for teenager Jones, but

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony said: “We don’t sell our young talent unless it’s for big money and Ricky is a big part of of our club’s post-Covid future. It’s no surprise big clubs are monitoring him though.”

Posh chiefs met yesterday (June 11) to discuss next season’s first-team squad, but an official retained list has yet to be announced.

Posh co-owner Dr Jason Neale said: “It was a very productive meeting and we are all confident of a strong 20-21 campaign. I am excited to look forward rather than battle the EFL.”
