Peterborough United transfer news: Striker seals exit, EPL club urged to move for ex-Posh talent

Peterborough United are riding high right now.

Darren Ferguson’s side are third in League One, just three points behind leaders Lincoln City, and with a game in hand on second-placed Hull City.

Their achievements so far are only made all the more impressive by the fact that they have managed to cement themselves in the race for promotion even after letting Ivan Toney leave the club.

The prolific striker was a key force for Posh during his spell with Ferguson’s side, and his tally of 49 goals in 94 outings was an eye-catching feat – so eye-catching, in fact, that it compelled Brentford to swoop for him last summer in a deal worth around £5 million.

If United owner Darragh MacAnthony is to be believed, however, then former Peterborough winger and Tottenham Hotspur manager David Pleat went out of his way to convince the Premier League outfit to move for the 24-year-old.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “Did all he could. Told Spurs to buy him. Love Pleaty.”

If Brentford fail to win promotion to the Premier League this season, the likelihood is that Toney will be in demand again this summer.

The striker has hit 23 goals and nine assists in 28 Championship outings this term, and his stats across the board show improvements from his final season with Peterborough.

As per Wyscout, Toney’s shot accuracy, xG, goals per game, and total action success rate have all gone up since he moved to the Championship.

Perhaps Spurs should have listened to Pleat when they had the chance.

Elsewhere, young forward Brad Rolt has joined Irish League Bohemians on loan until June.

The 17-year-old is a graduate of Posh’s academy system, and has previously spent time out on loan with Braintree.

The Irish league season is set to start up again in March, with the teenager expected to link up with the Bohs’ first team squad ahead of the new campaign.

As part of his spell in Ireland, the starlet is likely to feature in next season’s Europa League qualification rounds.
