The club’s co-owners Darragh MacAnthony, Dr Jason Neale and Stewart ‘Randy’ Thompson are aghast at the expected curtailment of the 2019-20 campaign, but have vowed to make Posh stronger in the future.

League One clubs are expected to vote to end the current season next week which means Posh will miss out on the play-offs.

The Posh owners are now working on several scenarios for the future.

Dr Neale said: “I have to say, on hearing the news from the EFL I went on a hike, sat under a tree and I cried.

“I then had a call with my partners and we planned the rebuilding. Hoping the wonderful Posh fans get behind us and we can ‘right this wrong’ in 2021.

“We have worked on many scenarios which include not play Football until 2021-2022. That plan includes a promotion-challenging team, a category 2 academy, purchasing London Road and continuing with plans to build a new stadium.

“Nothing has changed. That does not make the decision fair.”

Posh chairman MacAnthony has largely kept his powder dry since Wednesday’s EFL Board meeting, but he can be expected to deliver a passionate episode of his ‘Hard Truth’ podcast today (May 22).

MacAnthony did speak bfriefly on social media last night. He said: “These clubs voting to not play football, will they still want to stay home and not play when the new season (probably behind closed doors) resumes?

“My manager is distraught as are all the players who were full of excitement to get out of the house and go back to work.

“I didn’t become a football club owner at 29 by winning popularity contests. Haters are gonna hate. Those who are sensible understand the situation for what it is. As for the haters, keep it coming, fuel me up for what’s to come.”
