Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards has been forced into Covid-related self-isolation for a second time.

The 17 year-old will now miss tomorrow’s EFL Trophy tie with Portsmouth at the Weston Homes Stadium (January 12, 7pm kick off) and the rearranged third round FA Youth Cup tie with Doncaster Rovers at the club’s training gorund on Wednesday (2pm kick off).

Edwards is unlikley to be considered for Saturday’s League One home match with MK Dons either, even though experienced defender Nathan Thompson is suspended.

Edwards has been blameless ahead of both bouts of self-isolation. The good news is the rest of the first-team squad and support staff all tested negative for Covid following tests earlier today.

Posh manager Darren Ferguson explained: “Ronnie went home for Christmas and a family member tested positive and then so did Ronnie.

“He came back to us last Thursday and returned to his digs after which his landlady tested positive so Ronnie must self isolate for another 10 days.

“Ronnie has been very unlucky. It’s frustrating for him and for us as everyone can see what a talent he is. He would have had a good chance of playing tomorrow.

“All we can do is urge the players to be responsible to make sure Covid doesn’t creep into our bubble so it’s really pleasing to see everyone in the building test negative twice in a row. The virus is getting worse, the death toll is rising and we must all be very careful. That’s all we can do.”

Ferguson is set to name a stronger Trophy team than normal tomorrow. Teenagers Flynn Clarke and Benjamin Mensah are likely to be held back to play in the FA Youth Cup tie.
