Peterborough United skipper insists promotion must be decided on the pitch not by a computer

Peterborough United captain Mark Beevers is still hopeful League One promotion places will be decided on the pitch rather than by a computer.

It’s looking bleak for Posh as League One clubs are expected to vote for the curtailment of the League One season next week with final positions decided by an unweighted points-per-game formula. If so, Posh will finish seventh and miss out on the play-offs at a time when they expected to push hard for automatic promotion from League One.

But Beevers said: “I’m still hoping the situation can be resolved in such a way we can get back to doing what we love to do and that’s play football.

“It doesn’t sit right with me and with a lot of people that promotion can be decided by a computer. The matches should be played out. There are only nine games left.

“We were flying. We beat Pompey in our last game and we were looking good for a run at the top two never mind the top six. We are three points off second so two wins would get us right up there. There’s no doubt we would have been challenging for the top two if we’d have carried on playing.

“We had a lot of home games left and we have been so strong at our place. Obviously it’s not guaranteed we would win those games, but we would be very confident. The aim at the start of the season was top two and that’s still the aim.

“Obviously the season stopped for unfortunate cicrumstances which no-one could have done anyting about, but the Bundesliga has started again and our Premier League will start soon so we should be starting as well. There’s too much at stake with promotions and relegations for it to be decided by a computer.
